“Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” Luke 2:14
The night Jesus was born, the heavenly messengers said there was peace on Earth.
Peace is a prized state of existence that so many seek today. Since the creation, the only true time of peace mankind experienced occurred before the fall of Adam and Eve in the garden. Since the original sin, mankind has been unable to obtain harmony and tranquillity on Earth.
So why did the angels declare there was peace on Earth when our Saviour was born?
From the beginning, God’s plan was to use the seed of a woman to provide a Son who would crush the leader of the rebellion against God (Genesis 3:15) namely, that serpent of old, also called the Devil and Satan. This Son would bring true and lasting peace.
Through the prophet Isaiah, God called this promised Son the “Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6) On the night Jesus was born, the Prince of Peace came to Earth. Indeed, there was Peace on Earth, exactly as the angels had declared.
However, the apostle Paul reminds us that Christ is peace to all who confess their sin and place their faith in Him. When He takes residence in our hearts, He instils in us a peace that cannot be obtained any other way. It is the peace of reconciliation with God and the comfort of knowing we will spend eternity with Him.
